‘Hazes’ by Ed Scolding, performed by Anne Denholm.
About the music:
Each string on a harp is tuned separately. In Hazes one string is tuned down a quarter of a tone, so that when played at the same time as normal strings it produces a particularly rich-sounding chord. Once such a chord is plucked, the pitches ring in a very different way to a normally-tuned chord, with some pitches beating or becoming quieter or louder, and this ‘haze’ of sound inspired the piece. Hazes is in five short movements, each looking at the ‘haze’ effect in a different way.
Hazes was commissioned in 2011 by Cardiff Music Festival for performance by Anne Denholm, with support from the PRS for Music Foundation.
